  • ||||||||||  Review, Journal:  Sarcopenia and Frailty in Liver Cirrhosis. (Pubmed Central) -  May 1, 2021
    Both sarcopenia and frailty can be adverse predictors for cirrhotic patients. In this review article, we will summarize the current knowledge of sarcopenia and frailty in LC patients.
  • ||||||||||  [VIRTUAL] AAV1.NT-3 Gene Therapy Improves Motor Function in Accelerated Aging Model SOD1KO Mice () -  Apr 30, 2021 - Abstract #ASGCT2021ASGCT_591;
    This study shows that AAV1.NT-3 gene therapy improved neuromuscular function in the accelerated aging model SOD1KO mice. These results are consistent with our previous findings on the naturally aged wild type C57BL/6 mice (two years old) indicating the therapeutic potential of NT-3 for age-related sarcopenia and muscle wasting conditions.
  • ||||||||||  Review, Journal:  Non-Pharmacological Interventions in Osteosarcopenia: A Systematic Review. (Pubmed Central) -  Apr 30, 2021
    Chronic RT is safe and effective at potentiating gains in muscle mass, strength, and quality, and increasing or maintaining BMD in older osteosarcopenic adults. No RCT has examined the effects of protein, vitamin D, calcium, or creatine against a control/placebo in this high-risk population.
  • ||||||||||  Journal:  Development of the Brief Geriatric Assessment for the General Practitioner. (Pubmed Central) -  Apr 30, 2021
    Early management of geriatric syndromes in the community is important. The current study demonstrated a practical BGA tool for the general practitioner to comprehensively assess geriatric syndromes in community-dwelling older adults.
  • ||||||||||  Review, Journal:  Osteosarcopenia (Pubmed Central) -  Apr 30, 2021
    In the treatment of osteosarcopenia non-pharmacological measures must be initiated in addition to pharmacological measures. It is particularly important to clarify and if necessary to resolve the cause of falls resulting in fractures as well as to regularly reevaluate the treatment goals.
  • ||||||||||  [VIRTUAL] Prognostic impact of obesity in cancer patients with COVID-19 infection: A systematic review and meta-analysis. () -  Apr 29, 2021 - Abstract #ASCO2021ASCO_4736;
    Limitations of this study include a limited number of included studies, reliance on retrospective studies, non-use of ethnicity-specific WHO BMI criteria, and limited granularity of the study-reported BMI . Future prospective studies are warranted to assess the complex interplay among anthropomorphic measures, cachexia/sarcopenia, comorbidities associated with the metabolic syndrome, and COVID-19 outcomes in the cancer pt population.
  • ||||||||||  Journal:  Exercise protects proliferative muscle satellite cells against exhaustion via the Igfbp7-Akt-mTOR axis. (Pubmed Central) -  Apr 29, 2021
    The findings of our study show that exercise protects proliferative SCs against exhaustion via the Igfbp7-Akt-mTOR axis. These findings establish a link between mechanical signaling, mitochondrial metabolism, epigenetic modification, and stem cell fate decisions; thus, present potential therapeutic targets for muscle diseases correlated with SC exhaustion.
  • ||||||||||  Clinical, Journal:  Low bone mineral density in adults with complex congenital heart disease. (Pubmed Central) -  Apr 29, 2021
    The risk of osteoporosis is low in our relatively young population, but it is assumed to increase with ageing. We recommend that clinicians pay close attention to risk factors for osteoporosis, and are generous in administering DXA-measurements in order to prevent future fractures among adults with complex CHD.
  • ||||||||||  Clinical, Journal:  Practical applications of whey protein in supporting skeletal muscle maintenance, recovery, and reconditioning. (Pubmed Central) -  Apr 29, 2021
    Ongoing research efforts continue to refine our understanding of how protein quality, quantity and meal timing can be optimized to support retention of muscle mass and function during aging. Priority research areas include supplementation with high quality protein during illness/injury to stimulate anabolism by targeting molecular mechanisms that regulate skeletal muscle metabolism.
  • ||||||||||  Trial completion date, Trial primary completion date:  MNOP: Mirror Neurons in Older Participants (clinicaltrials.gov) -  Apr 29, 2021

    Priority research areas include supplementation with high quality protein during illness/injury to stimulate anabolism by targeting molecular mechanisms that regulate skeletal muscle metabolism. Trial completion date: Apr 2021 --> Apr 2022 | Trial primary completion date: Dec 2020 --> Dec 2021

  • ||||||||||  Journal:  Increased nuclear permeability is a driver for age-related motoneuron loss. (Pubmed Central) -  Apr 28, 2021
    Findings suggest that the loss of nuclear barrier integrity in combination with previously described defects in nucleocytoplasmic transport may drive increased nuclear permeability and contribute to age-related motoneuron death. These events may be significant indirect drivers of skeletal muscle loss.
  • ||||||||||  Biomarker, Review, Journal:  Inflammatory biomarkers of frailty. (Pubmed Central) -  Apr 28, 2021
    Furthermore, exercise training and nutritional counselling could be implemented in the standard care of the elderly in order to prevent, delay, or ameliorate frailty and to reduce the levels of blood inflammatory biomarkers. Such tools and decision-making outcomes would improve selection and treatment of the elderly and contribute to the ultimate goal - healthy ageing.
  • ||||||||||  Clinical, Journal:  Prognostic impact of low muscle mass and low muscle density in patients with diffuse large B-cell lymphoma. (Pubmed Central) -  Apr 28, 2021
    The combination of LMM and LMD is an independent prognostic factor for survival in DLBCL patients. This may guide clinical decision-making in patients with suspected insufficient performance to benefit from chemo-immunotherapy in standard doses.Key pointsPatients with DLBCL have low muscle mass (LMM) and low muscle density (LMD) compared to healthy counterparts.The combination of LMM and LMD is a negative prognostic factor for survival, independent of comorbidities and unfavorable lymphoma characteristics.
  • ||||||||||  Review, Journal:  Is inflammatory signaling involved in disease-related muscle wasting? Evidence from osteoarthritis, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and type II diabetes. (Pubmed Central) -  Apr 28, 2021
    Generally, if any, associations between inflammation and muscle are mainly based on observational and cross-sectional data. There is definitely a need for longitudinal evidence through well-powered randomized control trials that take into account confounders such as age, disease-phenotypes, comorbidities, physical (in) activity etc. This will allow to improve our understanding of the complex interaction between inflammatory signaling and muscle mass loss and hence contribute to the development of therapeutic strategies to combat muscle wasting in these diseases.
  • ||||||||||  Journal:  Superoxide-mediated oxidative stress accelerates skeletal muscle atrophy by synchronous activation of proteolytic systems. (Pubmed Central) -  Apr 28, 2021
    Furthermore, an increase in oxidative stress-induced muscle atrophy was also strongly coupled with simultaneous activation of two major proteolytic systems, the ubiquitin-proteasome and lysosomal autophagy pathways. Collectively, our data suggest that chronic oxidative stress in Sod1 mice accelerates age-dependent muscle atrophy by enhancing coordinated activation of the proteolytic systems, thereby resulting in overall protein degradation.
