  • ||||||||||  Journal:  Melatonin role in skeletal muscle disorders. (Pubmed Central) -  Jul 2, 2021
Our results suggested that MFG-E8 possesses broad prospects not only for use in functional food products but also as a source of natural anti-sarcopenia drugs. The findings of the research suggest that melatonin may be considered as a valid dietary supplement, useful to prevent muscle wasting, in particular, in sarcopenia-associated diseases.
  • ||||||||||  Review, Journal:  Botulinum Toxin A and Osteosarcopenia in Experimental Animals: A Scoping Review. (Pubmed Central) -  Jul 2, 2021
These findings may have implications for clinical protocols in the use of Botulinum Toxin in children with cerebral palsy, with restraint recommended in injection protocols and consideration for monitoring bone density. Clinical studies in children with cerebral palsy receiving injections of Botulinum are indicated.

  • ||||||||||  Clinical, Journal:  Sarcopenia is associated with longer hospital stay and multiorgan dysfunction in alcoholic hepatitis. (Pubmed Central) -  Jul 1, 2021
Trial completion date: Dec 2020 --> Jul 2022 | Trial primary completion date: Dec 2020 --> Jun 2022 Alcoholic hepatitis patients with sarcopenia have significantly worse outcomes when compared with the patients without sarcopenia, including a severe form of alcoholic hepatitis, longer hospital stays, higher risk of developing pneumonia, sepsis and hepatic encephalopathy.
  • ||||||||||  Retrospective data, Review, Journal:  Effect of exercise on myosteatosis in adults: a systematic review and meta-analysis. (Pubmed Central) -  Jul 1, 2021
Based on meta-regression analyses, there were no significant effects of mean age at baseline (lipid infiltration, β=-0.008 95% CI, -0.035 to 0.019; p=0.495; muscle attenuation, β=-0.013 95% CI, -0.036 to 0.011; p=0.248) and intervention duration (lipid infiltration, β=-0.008 95% CI, -0.028 to 0.010; p=0.311; muscle attenuation, β=-0.018 95% CI, -0.050 to 0.014; p=0.230) on the effect sizes estimates. Overall, our findings indicate that exercise can significantly improve muscle quality in populations at risk of developing obesity - and sarcopenia-related disability.
  • ||||||||||  Preclinical, Journal:  Exercise protects against cardiac and skeletal muscle dysfunction in a mouse model of inflammatory arthritis. (Pubmed Central) -  Jul 1, 2021
Conclusion The K/BxN mouse model of RA recapitulated important RA clinical comorbidities, including altered joint, cardiac and skeletal muscle function. These morphological, molecular and functional alterations were mitigated with regular exercise, thus suggesting exercise as a potential therapeutic intervention to lessen disease activity in the joint and the peripheral tissues, including the heart and skeletal muscle.
  • ||||||||||  Journal:  Diagnosing sarcopenia: functional perspectives and a new algorithm from the ISPRM special interest group on sarcopenia. (Pubmed Central) -  Jul 1, 2021
The advantages of this algorithm over the others are: special caution concerning disorders related to the renin-angiotensin system at the case finding stage; emphasis on anterior thigh muscle mass and function loss; incorporation of ultrasound for the first time to measure the anterior thigh muscle; and addition of a chair stand test as a power/performance test to assess anterior thigh muscle function. Refining and testing the algorithm remains a priority for future research.
  • ||||||||||  Journal:  Sarcopenia and the Brain. (Pubmed Central) -  Jul 1, 2021
Refining and testing the algorithm remains a priority for future research. No abstract available
  • ||||||||||  Journal:  Remote Rehabilitation: A Field-Based Feasibility Study of an mHealth Resistance Exercise Band. (Pubmed Central) -  Jun 30, 2021
Though not all patients completed each exercise type, patients were positive about use: patient activation measure: 80.7±14; system usability scale: 6.9±2.9; and confidence in use: 7.7±2.7. The BandPass system demonstrated its ability to collect data on exercise type, force during an exercise, and duration of exercise when older adults use it for monitoring exercise at home.
  • ||||||||||  Journal:  Geriatrics Fact Sheet in Korea 2021. (Pubmed Central) -  Jun 30, 2021
In addition, we reviewed recent updates in the field of frailty and sarcopenia from population-based community cohorts in Korea. We hope this study will serve as a current reference for nationwide statistical data on common clinical and social parameters used in geriatrics and gerontology.
  • ||||||||||  Biomarker, Journal:  Sarcopenia as prognostic factor for survival after orthotopic liver transplantation. (Pubmed Central) -  Jun 30, 2021
We hope this study will serve as a current reference for nationwide statistical data on common clinical and social parameters used in geriatrics and gerontology. Taken together this analysis provides evidence, which PSMI is a relevant marker for muscle mass and that sarcopenia is an independent predictor of early post-OLT survival in male patients.
  • ||||||||||  Clinical, Review, Journal:  Food Pyramid for Subjects with Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Diseases. (Pubmed Central) -  Jun 30, 2021
The nutrition pyramid described in our narrative review is hypothetical, even in light of several limitations of the present review; the main limitation is the fact that to date there are no randomized controlled trials in the literature clearly showing that improved nutrition, via the regulation of carbon dioxide produced/oxygen consumed, inflammation and oxidative stress, improves symptoms and/or progression of COPD. Even if this nutritional pyramid is hypothetical, we hope that it can serve the valuable purpose of helping researchers focus on the often-ignored possible connections between body composition, nutrition, and COPD.
  • ||||||||||  Review, Journal:  A critical review of weight loss recommendations before total knee arthroplasty. (Pubmed Central) -  Jun 30, 2021
Evidence to support a benefit of weight loss prior to TKA is lacking. Until knowledge gaps are clarified, it is recommended that practitioners consider individual patient needs and risk before recommending weight loss (and therefore BMI reduction).
  • ||||||||||  Review, Journal:  Frailty and Aging-Associated Syndromes in Lung Transplant Candidates and Recipients. (Pubmed Central) -  Jun 30, 2021
Aging-associated inflammation, telomere dysfunction, and adaptive immune system senescence may also contribute to frailty. Developing tools for frailty assessment and interventions holds promise for improving patient outcomes before and after lung transplantation.
  • ||||||||||  Review, Journal:  Towards Personalized Management of Sarcopenia in COPD. (Pubmed Central) -  Jun 30, 2021
Furthermore, effective current and new interventions targeting the pulmonary system (eg, smoking cessation, bronchodilators and lung volume reduction surgery) may also facilitate muscle maintenance. Better understanding of disease-specific pathophysiological mechanisms involved in the accelerated development of sarcopenia in COPD will provide new leads to refine nutritional, exercise and physical activity interventions and develop pharmacological co-interventions.
  • ||||||||||  Clinical, Review, Journal:  Distrectual osteosarcopenia in limb disuse: case report and mini literature review. (Pubmed Central) -  Jun 30, 2021
Sometimes these pathological conditions can involve only a skeleton segment, due to local disuse, causing a district form of sarcopenia. In this clinical case, Authors describes a case of isolated lower limb osteosarcopenia in a young non-osteoporotic patient, due to a prolonged limb disuse, complicated by surgical treatment failure for previous pathology, diagnosed by clinical, laboratory, instrumental and histopathological exams.
  • ||||||||||  Journal:  Calf circumference: cutoff values from the NHANES 1999-2006. (Pubmed Central) -  Jun 30, 2021
Implementation of BIA in clinical practice may identify patients with sarcopenia at risk for poor survival. This study defined CC values in a diverse population sample along with a BMI-adjustment approach that helps to remove the confounding effects of adiposity and thereby improves CC as a useful clinical estimate of SM mass.
  • ||||||||||  Journal:  A new diagnostic criterion for sarcopenia: the fallout of lack of consensus. (Pubmed Central) -  Jun 30, 2021
The authors must be congratulated for collating the data of more than 11,000 individuals and highlighting the synergistic effect of NAFLD and sarcopenia on poor overall outcomes. We would like to highlight a few points pertaining to this study.
