  • ||||||||||  Journal:  Three artificial intelligence data challenges based on CT and MRI. (Pubmed Central) -  Jul 16, 2021
    Three data challenges with over 1200 general data protection regulation compliant CT or MRI examinations each were organized. Future challenges should be made with more complex situations combining histopathological or genetic information to resemble real life situations faced by radiologists in routine practice.
  • ||||||||||  Journal:  Longitudinal Associations between Brain Volume and Knee Extension Peak Torque. (Pubmed Central) -  Jul 16, 2021
    In older adults, declines in knee extension muscle strength co-occurred with atrophies in frontal, temporal and occipital gray matter. These findings support the idea that age-related knee extension muscle strength is linked with atrophy in some specific brain regions related to motor control.
  • ||||||||||  Review, Journal:  Where Two Common Conditions of Aging Meet: Osteoarthritis and Sarcopenia. (Pubmed Central) -  Jul 16, 2021
    Common therapeutic recommendations are still missing. There is a need for good quality prospective studies on concomitant sarcopenia and osteoarthritis, more translational research, and pharmacological and non-pharmacological therapies in order to identify common denominators for the management of sarcopenia, osteoarthritis, and their comorbidities.
  • ||||||||||  Journal:  Magnetic resonance imaging assessment of body composition parameters in Crohn's disease. (Pubmed Central) -  Jul 16, 2021
    Higher paraspinous SMA and SMD, automatically derived from CT exams, were associated with better survival in a large multicenter cohort of community-dwelling older men. Assessment of body composition is feasible and reproducible in routine MR and parameters are related to disease activity.
  • ||||||||||  Journal:  Sarcopenia and Its Association with Vertebral Fractures in People Living with HIV. (Pubmed Central) -  Jul 16, 2021
    In multiple regression analysis, sarcopenia was associated with age and multiple vertebral fractures. Sarcopenia was present in 12% of this population of PLHIV age ≥ 50 years and was associated with lower hip BMD and a high prevalence of vertebral fractures.
  • ||||||||||  Journal:  Elevation of phosphate levels impairs skeletal myoblast differentiation. (Pubmed Central) -  Jul 16, 2021
    Serum phosphate levels as low as the upper normal serum range significantly impaired marker gene expression in vitro. Investigation of cellular effects of hyperphosphatemia may help to better define serum cutoffs and modify existing treatment approaches of phosphate binders, especially in patients at risk of sarcopenia.
  • ||||||||||  Enrollment open:  Comparison of the Swallowing Functions in Sarcopenia and Dynapenia (clinicaltrials.gov) -  Jul 15, 2021
    P=N/A,  N=108, Recruiting,
    These findings highlight that SEP and health inequality should be considered in prevention and treatment policy for sarcopenia in the community. Not yet recruiting --> Recruiting
  • ||||||||||  Clinical, Journal:  Feasibility of simple exercise interventions for men with osteoporosis - A prospective randomized controlled pilot study. (Pubmed Central) -  Jul 15, 2021
    In this exploratory trial we found that simple exercise interventions are feasible in elderly men eliciting specific benefits, i.e. improvements are attained in those tasks addressed with the respective exercise modality. While targeted resistance training is superior in increasing TSE, alternative simple exercise interventions also appear to elicit beneficial effects, even in vulnerable patients, i.e. those with low muscle mass, above 80 years of age or multimorbidity.
  • ||||||||||  Biomarker, Journal:  Novel methods to identify and measure catabolism. (Pubmed Central) -  Jul 15, 2021
    Similarly, sarcopenia index can be used to assess muscle mass and indirectly measure catabolism based on readily available biochemical measurements. The utility of novel biomarkers, such as GDF-15 is less established.
  • ||||||||||  Clinical, Journal:  Evaluation of overall and disease-free survival in patients with free flaps for oral cancer resection. (Pubmed Central) -  Jul 14, 2021
    Low SMM is a significant negative prognostic factor for overall and disease-free survival in oral cancer patients undergoing free flap. Future prospective studies are warranted to identify effective preoperative exercise and nutrition programs to improve low skeletal muscle and survival rate in patients undergoing free flap procedures.
  • ||||||||||  Journal:  The role of sarcopenic obesity in high-grade endometrial cancer. (Pubmed Central) -  Jul 14, 2021
    Sarcopenic obesity is associated with OS in high-grade EEC patients, while sarcopenia without obesity is not related to OS or DSS in high-grade EC. In non-endometrioid endometrial cancer, there is no association between sarcopenic obesity and survival.
  • ||||||||||  Preclinical, Journal:  Quantitative intravital imaging reveals in vivo dynamics of physiological-stress induced mitophagy. (Pubmed Central) -  Jul 14, 2021
    Intriguingly, mutation of a single mitophagy receptor bnip3 prevented this effect, whereas disruption of other putative hypoxia-associated mitophagy genes bnip3la (nix), fundc1, pink1 or prkn (Parkin) had no effect. This in vivo imaging study establishes fundamental dynamics of fasting-induced mitophagy and identifies bnip3 as the master regulator of Hif-induced mitophagy in vertebrate muscle.
  • ||||||||||  Clinical, Journal:  Depression and low physical activity are related to sarcopenia in hemodialysis: a single-center study. (Pubmed Central) -  Jul 13, 2021
    Furthermore, low physical activity and high depression scores in combination with sarcopenia were associated with an increased mortality risk. Low physical activity and high depression scores were also independently associated with sarcopenia in hemodialysis patients after controlling for age (odds ratio = 3.23, and 4.92, respectively).
  • ||||||||||  Trial completion date, Trial primary completion date:  Immunophenotype of Risk in Older Patients Admitted for Pneumonia (clinicaltrials.gov) -  Jul 13, 2021
    P=N/A,  N=149, Recruiting,
    Protocol registration: This meta-analysis was registered on INPLASY (registration number INPLASY202120060). Trial completion date: Jun 2022 --> Jun 2023 | Trial primary completion date: Jun 2020 --> Jul 2021
  • ||||||||||  Review, Journal:  Skeletal muscle - A bystander or influencer of metabolic syndrome? (Pubmed Central) -  Jul 11, 2021
    In older men, ALM and grip strength may be associated with the development of knee OA and knee pain, respectively. Whilst numerous studies have identified a relationship between metabolic syndrome and skeletal muscle abnormalities, further investigation into the underlying mechanisms is needed to elucidate the best prevention and management strategies for these conditions.
  • ||||||||||  Clinical, Journal:  Osteogenesis imperfecta in children. (Pubmed Central) -  Jul 11, 2021
    The alternatives that might affect tissue brittleness are autophagy enhancement (through the removal of abnormal type I collagen aggregates) and stem cell transplantation - both still at the preclinical stage of assessment. Preclinical assessment is not supportive of targeting inflammatory pathways, although understanding why TGFb signalling is increased, and whether that presents a treatment target in OI, remains to be established.
  • ||||||||||  Review, Journal:  Lean Mass Abnormalities in Heart Failure: The Role of Sarcopenia, Sarcopenic Obesity, and Cachexia. (Pubmed Central) -  Jul 10, 2021
    In this review article, we describe the most common body composition abnormalities related to the LM compartment, including skeletal and respiratory muscle mass abnormalities, and the consequences of such anomalies on CRF and muscle strength in patients with HF. Finally, we discuss the potential nonpharmacologic therapeutic strategies such as exercise training (ie, aerobic exercise and resistance exercise) and dietary interventions (ie, dietary supplementation and dietary patterns) that have been implemented to target body composition, with a focus on HF.
