  • ||||||||||  Journal:  Prehabilitation: metabolic considerations. (Pubmed Central) -  Aug 8, 2021
    The present paper will discuss the metabolic implications of modulating preoperative risk factors with elements of multimodal prehabilitation, such as exercise training and nutrition.
  • ||||||||||  Clinical, Journal:  Counteracting age-related VEGF signaling insufficiency promotes healthy aging and extends life span. (Pubmed Central) -  Aug 8, 2021
    Healthier aging was evidenced by favorable metabolism and body composition and amelioration of aging-associated pathologies including hepatic steatosis, sarcopenia, osteoporosis, "inflammaging" (age-related multiorgan chronic inflammation), and increased tumor burden. These results indicate that VEGF signaling insufficiency affects organ aging in mice and suggest that modulating this pathway may result in increased mammalian life span and improved overall health.
  • ||||||||||  Journal:  A Sarcopenia Detection System Using an RGB-D Camera and an Ultrasound Probe: Eye-in-Hand Approach. (Pubmed Central) -  Aug 7, 2021
    The modified system and enhanced algorithm were verified by an in-vitro test with bean curd-gelatin phantom. The results showed that the thickness of bean curd in the gelatin phantom was maintained at approximately 12.7 ± 0.35 mm over the 71.5∘ scanning range with 2.49 ± 0.15 N radial force at various thickness measuring points.
  • ||||||||||  Preclinical, Journal:  Morphological Evidence of Telocytes in Skeletal Muscle Interstitium of Exercised and Sedentary Rodents. (Pubmed Central) -  Aug 7, 2021
    The results showed that Telocytes were significantly reduced in sedentary rats at 16 weeks, while rats subjected to regular exercise maintained a stable Telocytes population after 16 weeks. Understanding of the relationship between Telocytes and exercise offers new chances in the field of regenerative medicine, suggesting possible triggers for Telocytes in sarcopenia and other musculoskeletal disorders, promoting adapted physical activity and rehabilitation programmes in clinical practice.
  • ||||||||||  Prezista (darunavir) / J&J, Isentress (raltegravir) / Merck (MSD)
    Journal:  Effects of atazanavir, darunavir, and raltegravir on fat and muscle among persons living with HIV. (Pubmed Central) -  Aug 7, 2021
    DRV/r was associated with greater fat area and lower density of both fat and muscle, and RAL with less intermuscular psoas fat. Higher density psoas and paraspinal musculature were associated with better physical function, suggesting potential clinical relevance of these findings.
  • ||||||||||  Journal:  Study of the Expression and Function of Calcium-Sensing Receptor in Human Skeletal Muscle. (Pubmed Central) -  Aug 7, 2021
    The results obtained from analyses with various techniques of gene and protein CaSR expression and of its secondary messengers in response to calcium (Ca) and CaSR drugs have demonstrated that this receptor is not present in human skeletal muscle tissues, neither in the established satellite cells, nor during in vitro myogenic differentiation. Taken together, our data suggest that, although CaSR is a very important drug target in physiology and pathology, this receptor probably does not have any physiological role in skeletal muscle in normal conditions.
  • ||||||||||  [VIRTUAL] Undernutrition in patients with primary hepatocellular carcinoma () -  Aug 6, 2021 - Abstract #ILCA2021ILCA_88;
    Undernutrition is an independent factor affecting the prognosis of primary HCC patients, and sarcopenia might be an adequate biomarker representing the undernutrition in male HCC patients. On the other hand, sarcopenia might not be adequate in female HCC patients.
  • ||||||||||  Biomarker, Journal:  Neuromuscular Junction Aging: A Role for Biomarkers and Exercise. (Pubmed Central) -  Aug 6, 2021
    Recent insights into the importance of key biomarkers for NMJ stability are provided, while the stimulative benefits of exercise in preserving NMJ function are demonstrated. Further elucidation of the diagnostic and prognostic relevance of biomarkers, coupled with the therapeutic benefits of regular exercise may be crucial in combatting age-related NMJ and skeletal muscle degradation.
  • ||||||||||  Journal:  Optimal body size adjustment of L3 CT skeletal muscle area for sarcopenia assessment. (Pubmed Central) -  Aug 6, 2021
    We propose [Formula: see text] for optimal height adjustment and the [Formula: see text] score for optimal height and BMI adjustment. By minimizing correlations with height and BMI, the [Formula: see text] score produces unbiased assessments of relative L3 skeletal muscle area across the full range of body sizes.
  • ||||||||||  Review, Journal:  Hippo pathway effectors YAP and TAZ and their association with skeletal muscle ageing. (Pubmed Central) -  Aug 6, 2021
    Most of the present researches on YAP/TAZ are focused on its oncogenicity and further studies are needed to translate these findings to physiological ageing. Taken together, the modulation of YAP/TAZ or the Hippo pathway in general may offer potential new strategies for the prevention or treatment of ageing.
  • ||||||||||  Clinical, Journal:  Reduced neural excitability and activation contribute to clinically-meaningful weakness in older adults. (Pubmed Central) -  Aug 5, 2021
    Further investigation of this relationship as related to outcomes is needed to support the establishment of routine preoperative nutritional and sarcopenic evaluation and intervention. These findings suggest that neurotherapeutic interventions targeting excitability could be a viable approach to increase muscle strength in order to reduce the risk of physical impairments in late-life.
  • ||||||||||  Clinical, Journal:  Prevalence of sarcopenia in older women with pelvic floor dysfunction. (Pubmed Central) -  Aug 5, 2021
    Healthcare providers who assist women with PFD should consider the possibility of assessing sarcopenia, especially when faced with more extensive POP in older women. The evaluation of sarcopenia may play a role in the management of women with PFD.
  • ||||||||||  Review, Journal, HEOR:  Nutrition in old age-key to maintaining functionality and quality of life (Pubmed Central) -  Aug 4, 2021
    If sarcopenia is already present, the recommended protein intake is raised towards 1.2 g/kg bodyweight. While restrictive are diets may be detrimental in older persons, healthy diets like the Mediterranean diet may support the preservation of muscular and cognitive function.
  • ||||||||||  Clinical, Journal:  The effect of vitamin D on sarcopenia depends on the level of physical activity in older adults. (Pubmed Central) -  Aug 4, 2021
    It is recommended that older adults strive to avoid both physical inactivity and vitamin D deficiency. Because physical inactivity and vitamin D deficiency may exacerbate muscle atrophy, the biological mechanism may involve synergistic effects of vitamin D and physical activity on the promotion of muscle protein ubiquitination and degradation.
  • ||||||||||  Clinical, Journal:  Fat-to-muscle ratio as a predictor of insulin resistance and metabolic syndrome in Korean adults. (Pubmed Central) -  Aug 4, 2021
    In the present study, a high FMR was significantly associated with the prevalence of MetS and IR. The present findings also showed that FMR can be a novel indicator for detecting the absence or presence of MetS, particularly in metabolically healthy normal-weight individuals and metabolically obese obese-weight individuals.
  • ||||||||||  Review, Journal:  Osteosarcopenia: the Path Beyond Controversy. (Pubmed Central) -  Aug 4, 2021
    The absence of a consensus operational definition of sarcopenia, and inaccurate measures of muscle mass, has hampered global progress in the field. We present a case for the path forward by reflecting on our recent history.
  • ||||||||||  Review, Journal:  Cancer cachexia and its pathophysiology: links with sarcopenia, anorexia and asthenia. (Pubmed Central) -  Aug 4, 2021
    Some related conditions, like sarcopenia (age-related muscle wasting), anorexia (appetite loss) and asthenia (reduced muscular strength and fatigue), share some key features with cancer cachexia, such as weakness and systemic inflammation. Understanding the interplay and the differences between these conditions is critical to advance basic and translational research in this field, improving the accuracy of diagnosis and contributing to finally achieve effective therapies for affected patients.
