  • ||||||||||  Clinical, Journal:  Association between oral health status and handgrip strength in older Korean adults. (Pubmed Central) -  Aug 20, 2021
    Low handgrip strength was associated with using full dentures and remaining 0-9 teeth in older men. Low grip strength, one of the key characteristics of sarcopenia and frailty, may serve as an important indicator of poor oral health, especially among men in late life.
  • ||||||||||  Journal:  Is YouTube a quality source of information on sarcopenia? (Pubmed Central) -  Aug 20, 2021
    Overall, according to the results of the study, it can be asserted that high quality may be related to reliability. Furthermore, healthcare professionals and academics should consider using YouTube for increasing knowledge and raising awareness of patients about sarcopenia.
  • ||||||||||  Clinical, Clinical data, Journal:  Pathophysiological mechanisms explaining poor clinical outcome of older cancer patients with low skeletal muscle mass. (Pubmed Central) -  Aug 20, 2021
    The effects of glucose intolerance and circulating mitochondrial DNA as a consequence of low muscle mass are topics of interest for future research. Restoring myokine balance through physical exercise, exercise mimetics, neuro-muscular activation and adapting anticancer drug dosing on muscle mass could be targeted approaches to improve clinical outcomes in older cancer patients with low muscle mass.
  • ||||||||||  Clinical, Journal:  Cystatin C and muscle mass in patients with heart failure. (Pubmed Central) -  Aug 20, 2021
    Cystatin C levels were associated with muscle mass in patients with HF, which could potentially decrease the accuracy of eGFRcys. In HF where aberrations in body composition are common, eGFRcys, like eGFRcr, may not provide accurate GFR estimations and results should be interpreted cautiously.
  • ||||||||||  Preclinical, Journal:  The Body Region Specificity in Murine Models of Muscle Regeneration and Atrophy. (Pubmed Central) -  Aug 20, 2021
    In HF where aberrations in body composition are common, eGFRcys, like eGFRcr, may not provide accurate GFR estimations and results should be interpreted cautiously. Our results indicate that positional identities in muscles should be considered for the development of efficient regenerative therapies for muscle weakness, such as muscular dystrophy and age-related sarcopenia.
  • ||||||||||  Review, Journal:  Nonalcoholic Fatty Liver Disease and Sarcopenia: Where Do We Stand? (Pubmed Central) -  Aug 20, 2021
    Therefore, future investigations should combine studies on NAFLD and sarcopenia in terms of physical activity and nutritional interventions such as vitamin D supplementation. This review aims to report recent evidence concerning the links between sarcopenia and NAFLD and methods to assess sarcopenia.
  • ||||||||||  Review, Journal:  Muscle-Bone Crosstalk in Chronic Kidney Disease: The Potential Modulatory Effects of Exercise. (Pubmed Central) -  Aug 20, 2021
    The detection of bone- and muscle-derived cytokine secretion following physical exercise has strengthened the idea of a cross communication between these organs. Hence, this review presents an overview of the impact of CKD in bone and skeletal muscle, and narrates how these tissues intrinsically communicate with each other, with focus on the potential effect of exercise in the modulation of this intercommunication.
  • ||||||||||  cisplatin / Generic mfg.
    Clinical, Journal:  Impact of muscle volume loss on acute oral mucositis in patients undergoing concurrent chemoradiotherapy after oral cancer resection. (Pubmed Central) -  Aug 20, 2021
    A low skeletal muscle mass (hazard ratio 18.1; P=0.001) and a chemotherapy regimen consisting of 5-fluorouracil and cisplatin (versus cisplatin only) (hazard ratio 5.5; P=0.015) were independent risk factors for severe oral mucositis. Future prospective studies are warranted to identify effective pre- and perioperative exercises and nutrition programmes to increase low skeletal muscle mass and reduce the incidence of severe oral mucositis in patients undergoing concurrent chemoradiotherapy after oral cancer resection.
  • ||||||||||  Clinical, Review, Journal:  Imaging Software-Based Sarcopenia Assessment in Gastroenterology: Evolution and Clinical Meaning. (Pubmed Central) -  Aug 20, 2021
    As a result, we found that the skeletal muscle index (SMI) seems to be a reliable method to assess sarcopenia in cirrhotic patients. Even if further studies are needed to validate proper cut-offs for each clinical endpoint, physicians are invited to consider the assessment of sarcopenia in the work-up of patients with chronic liver disease.
  • ||||||||||  Clinical, Journal:  Healthy Aging-Nutrition Matters: Start Early and Screen Often. (Pubmed Central) -  Aug 20, 2021
    These summary findings indicate that healthy nutrition is more important for healthy aging than generally recognized. Improved public health messaging about nutrition and aging, combined with routine screening and medical referrals for age-related conditions that can be treated with a nutrition prescription, should form core components of a national nutrition roadmap to reduce the epidemic of unhealthy aging.
  • ||||||||||  Clinical, Journal:  High neutrophil to lymphocytes ratio is associated with sarcopenia risk in hospitalized cancer patients. (Pubmed Central) -  Aug 19, 2021
    In CKD patients, segmental MFBIA measurements of the arm, but not those derived from anthropometric measurements demonstrate gender differences and correlate with arm muscle strength, whereas there were no such correlations with anthropometric estimates of upper arm muscle or fat. In hospitalized cancer patients, systemic inflammation measured by NLR was associated with increased sarcopenia risk.
  • ||||||||||  Clinical, Review, Journal:  Age and Sex-Related Decline of Muscle Strength Across the Adult Lifespan: A scoping review of aggregated data. (Pubmed Central) -  Aug 19, 2021
    The results suggest that age-related isometric strength loss is similar between sexes while the characteristics of KE and KF peak torque decline are sex-related which likely explains the differential rate of age-related functional decline. Novelty • Inclusion of muscle strength and torque of KE and KF data from >15 000 subjects • Isometric KE and KF strength loss are similar between sexes • Isokinetic 60°s-1 KE torque decline accelerates 25 years earlier in females and female age-related KF peak torque decline does not accelerate with age.
  • ||||||||||  Trial primary completion date:  The Role of Physical Activity for Acute Exacerbations of COPD (clinicaltrials.gov) -  Aug 18, 2021
    P=N/A,  N=40, Active, not recruiting,
    As frailty, sarcopenia, and malnutrition are all areas of common derangement in the older surgical population, prospectively studying these risk factors in concert will allow for the analysis of their interplay as well as the development of predictive models for those at risk of commonly tracked surgical complications and outcomes. Trial primary completion date: Apr 2021 --> Aug 2021
