    Low SMM was a significant independent factor that was associated with lower survival in patients who have oral cavity cancers and are undergoing primary surgery. Preoperative CT scans of the head and neck could be utilized to evaluate SMM, predict treatment outcomes, and facilitate nutrition management.

    Increases in inflammatory factors (IL-6 and MCP-1), adipokines (leptin and resistin), and myostatin in serum at week 32 and decline in Pax7+ satellite cell resided next to muscle fibers at week 24 implied that muscle microenvironment contributed to the progression of sarcopenia in SAMP8 mice. Our data suggest that early alterations of mitochondrial quality control and autophagic flux worsen muscle microenvironment prior to the onset of sarcopenia.

    Societal guidelines recommend early enteral nutrition in critically ill patients; however, in this population, optimal timing and dose of nutrition remains unknown and fear of reduced splanchnic perfusion, delayed gastric emptying, and bowel ischemia poses a barrier to appropriate energy and protein intake. This narrative review intends to provide an overview of ECMO, highlight the rationale for nutrition support in this population, and review the safety, tolerability, and outcomes associated with enteral nutrition during ECMO.

    Clinical, Journal:  Association of Nonalcoholic Hepatic Fibrosis with Body Composition in Female and Male Psoriasis Patients. (Pubmed Central) -  Aug 28, 2021   
    In this study anthropometric assessment (body weight and body mass index (BMI)), body composition analysis (body fat%, visceral fat scores and muscle mass%), and liver stiffness measurements (using transient elastography [TE]) were done in 52 psoriasis patients undergoing methotrexate therapy...In males, body fat% (R = 0.578, p = 0.002) and, especially, visceral fat scores (R = 0.716, p < 0.001) had statistically significant correlation with stiffness scores, while in females only visceral fat scores were statistically significant predictors of the liver stiffness values (R = 0.452, p = 0.023), and body fat% was not (R = 0.187, p = 0.382). Our results suggest that anthropometric data should be assessed differently in female and male psoriasis patients when evaluating liver fibrosis risk.

    In addition, due to the insufficient number of studies on Japanese Food Guide Spinning Top (JFG-ST), dietary variety score (DVS), and dietary quality index-international (DQI-I), effectiveness was difficult to prove. Studies using factor analysis to examine dietary patterns suggested that the risk of sarcopenia is increased with a high in saturated fat diet such as westernized pattern etc. (4) In this systematic review it was found that various diet qualities are meaningful to a decreased risk of sarcopenia.

    Old age (OR 1.11), high BMI (OR 1.13), and a high Disease Activity Score 28 (OR 1.95) were associated with sarcopenia as reported on the SARC-F. Male, low BMI, and use of TNF inhibitors were associated with a low muscle mass, while male sex, old age, and low BMI were associated with sarcopenia in patients with long-standing RA.

    Holding workshops or training regarding sarcopenia (outpatient departments; OR = 7.51, 95% confidence interval (CI): 2.12-26.6, wards; OR = 2.61, 95% CI: 1.11-6.15) was significantly associated with dissemination practices. These findings suggest that expanding knowledge of sarcopenia and developing practical skills among general nurses may aid in preventing sarcopenia among patients with CLD.

    To determine whether deletion of Sod1 initiated in neurons in adult mice is sufficient to induce muscle atrophy, we treated young (2- to 4-month-old) Sod1flox/SlickHCre mice with tamoxifen to generate i-mn-Sod1KO mice...Overall, our findings show that neuronal-specific deletion of CuZnSOD is sufficient to cause motor neuron loss in young mice, but that NMJ disruption, muscle atrophy, and weakness are not evident until past middle age. These results suggest that loss of innervation is critical but may not be sufficient until the muscle reaches a threshold beyond which it cannot compensate for neuronal loss or rescue additional fibers past the maximum size of the motor unit.

    However, when C2C12 cells were exposed to βHB in the presence of equimolar HMB this chromatin modification was drastically reduced, pointing to a role for HMB in attenuating ketosis-associated muscle wasting. In conclusion, while their mechanistic underpinnings remain to be clarified, these preliminary observations highlight novel and potentially important activities of HMB as an epigenetic regulator and βHB antagonist in muscle precursor cells, to be further explored in their biomedical implications.
