  • ||||||||||  Review, Journal:  Head and Neck Cancer and Sarcopenia: An Integrative Clinical and Functional Review. (Pubmed Central) -  Oct 26, 2024
Interventions and management strategies for sarcopenia involve exercise interventions as a cornerstone; however, challenges arise due to patient-specific limitations during cancer treatment. A routine body composition analysis is proposed as a valuable addition to HNC patient management, with ongoing research required to refine preoperative exercise and nutrition programs for improved treatment outcomes and survival.
  • ||||||||||  Retrospective data, Journal:  Impact of sarcopenia and fat distribution on outcomes in penile cancer. (Pubmed Central) -  Oct 26, 2024
We showed that sarcopenia occurs in a relevant part of patients with penile cancer and is a significant risk factor for overall survival (p?=?0.032) and cancer specific survival (p?=?0.034) for patients with penile cancer. Regarding fat distribution further studies are needed to evaluate its impact on sarcopenia and survival.
  • ||||||||||  Review, Journal:  Ammonia-induced stress response in liver disease progression and hepatic encephalopathy. (Pubmed Central) -  Oct 26, 2024
A clear causal relationship between ammonia-induced immune dysfunction and risk of infection has not yet been definitively proven. In this Review, we discuss the mechanisms by which ammonia produces its diverse deleterious effects and their clinical relevance in liver diseases, the importance of measuring ammonia levels for the diagnosis of hepatic encephalopathy, the prognosis of patients with cirrhosis and liver failure, and how our knowledge of inter-organ ammonia metabolism is leading to the development of novel therapeutic approaches.
  • ||||||||||  Journal:  Skeletal muscle size and quality in healthy kidney donors, normal range and clinical associations. (Pubmed Central) -  Oct 25, 2024
Our study validates the normative values of psoas muscle mass and density in healthy individuals and suggests correlations with clinical parameters. We demonstrate the significance of measuring not only the mass of the muscle, but also its density, as it has a valid association with metabolic parameters, including BMI and lipid level, even in healthy individuals and in the normal range of the tests.
  • ||||||||||  Review, Journal:  Advancements in sarcopenia diagnosis: from imaging techniques to non-radiation assessments. (Pubmed Central) -  Oct 24, 2024
Standardized protocols, such as those proposed by the Sarcopenia through Ultrasound (SARCUS) Working Group, are imperative for ensuring consistency across assessments. Future research should focus on refining these techniques and harnessing the potential of radiomics and artificial intelligence to enhance diagnostic accuracy and prognostic capabilities in sarcopenia.
  • ||||||||||  Review, Journal, Metastases:  A short history of sarcopenia and frailty and their impact on advanced chronic liver disease. (Pubmed Central) -  Oct 23, 2024
The prevalence of frailty in patients with advanced chronic liver disease is 27%. Given the high prevalence of sarcopenia and frailty in this population, early diagnosis and treatment are crucial to improving patient quality of life outcomes and reducing the strain on healthcare systems globally.
