- |||||||||| Review, Journal: Prevalence of Sarcopenia in Africa: A Systematic Review. (Pubmed Central) - Jul 14, 2023
The prevalence of sarcopenia in Africa was relatively high. However, the fact that the majority of included studies were hospital-based studies shows the necessity of further community-based studies in order to have a more accurate representation of the situation in the general population.
- |||||||||| Review, Journal: Lean nonalcoholic fatty liver disease and sarcopenia. (Pubmed Central) - Jul 14, 2023
The pathological features of lean NAFLD such as visceral obesity, insulin resistance, and metabolic inflammation are inducers of sarcopenia, whereas loss of muscle mass and function further exacerbates ectopic fat accumulation and lean NAFLD. Therefore, we discussed the association of sarcopenia and lean NAFLD, summarized the underlying pathological mechanisms, and proposed potential strategies to reduce the risks of lean NAFLD and sarcopenia in this review.
- |||||||||| Journal: Detection of Sarcopenia in a Community-Dwelling Older Population in China. (Pubmed Central) - Jul 13, 2023
Calf circumference is useful in ruling out the presence of sarcopenia while the SARC-F is more effective in ruling in sarcopenia, especially in the context of population-based screening. Future studies should be carried out to investigate the value of population-based sarcopenia detection using these screening tools.
- |||||||||| Journal, Adverse events, Surgery, Metastases: Implication of nutritional status for adverse outcomes after surgery for metastatic spine tumors. (Pubmed Central) - Jul 13, 2023
Nutrition consultation was associated with a reduced risk of wound-related complications, attesting to the importance of this preoperative intervention. These findings suggest that nutrition plays an important role in the postsurgical course and should be considered when developing a treatment plan for spinal metastases.
- |||||||||| Journal, Surgery: Association Between History of Lumbar Spine Surgery and Paralumbar Muscle Health: A Propensity Score-Matched Analysis. (Pubmed Central) - Jul 12, 2023
The current study demonstrates that history of lumbar spine surgery is associated with worse paralumbar muscle health based on quantitative and qualitative measurements on MRI. On average, patients with history of spine surgery were found to have smaller cross-sectional areas of the paralumbar muscles, greater amounts of fatty infiltration based on Goutallier classification, and smaller lumbar indentation values.

P=N/A, N=60, Recruiting, After adjusting for confounding factors and protein intake, women aged 65 years and older who suffered osteosarcopenia had considerably lower odds ratio of performing strengthening exercises. - |||||||||| Journal: Sclerostin decreases in regular swimmers after ice swimming and is associated with meteorin-like protein serum levels. (Pubmed Central) - Jul 12, 2023
IS caused a significant decrease in sclerostin but did not affect metrnl. Furthermore, the associations between sclerostin and metrnl suggested a correlation between osteokines and adipomyokines; this encourages future exploration of the interconnection between bone, muscle, and fat, which will be beneficial for identifying potential common therapeutic targets for diseases such as osteoporosis, sarcopenia, and obesity.
- |||||||||| Retrospective data, Journal: The efficacy of different interventions in the treatment of sarcopenia in middle-aged and elderly people: A network meta-analysis. (Pubmed Central) - Jul 11, 2023
Compared with aerobic exercise, mixed exercise, nutrition, resistance combined with nutrition, mixed exercise combined with nutrition, and electric stimulation combined with nutrition, resistance exercise has more advantages in improving muscle mass, strength, and physical function performance. The clinical treatment of sarcopenia with resistance exercise intervention has a better curative effect.
- |||||||||| Journal: Prognostic value of sarcopenic visceral obesity in hepatocellular carcinoma treated with TACE. (Pubmed Central) - Jul 11, 2023
According to the results of multifactor analysis, sarcopenic visceral obesity (HR?=?8.35, 95% confidence intervals [CI]?=?[4.96, 14.05], P ?<?.001) is more effective than any single or combined prognosis assessment, including sarcopenic dystrophy (HR?=?2.70, 95% CI?=?[1.85, 3.95], P ?<?.001), sarcopenic obesity (HR?=?5.23, 95% CI?=?[3.41, 8.02], P ?<?.001), sarcopenia (HR?=?5.74, 95% CI?=?[3.61, 9.11], P ?<?.001) and visceral obesity (HR?=?3.44, 95% CI?=?[2.24, 5.27], P ?<?.001). Sarcopenic visceral obesity, defined by SMI and VFI, is a more objective and accurate prognostic indicator of HCC.
- |||||||||| Journal, Surgery: Nutritional indices for screening sarcopenia before adult cardiac surgery. (Pubmed Central) - Jul 10, 2023
The median durations of mechanical support (17 vs. 16 hours; P=0.008) and intensive care unit stay (3 vs. 2 days; P=0.001) were significantly longer in the sarcopenic group. NRI offers a more straightforward, faster, and reproducible screening tool than muscle strength or mass measurement for identifying sarcopenia, and an alternative means of assessment in patients with limited activity before adult cardiac surgery.

- |||||||||| Review, Journal: Role of ammonia in NAFLD: An unusual suspect. (Pubmed Central) - Jul 10, 2023
There is currently no rational way to reverse reduced urea cycle activity but there are promising animal and human reports of ammonia-lowering strategies correcting several of the mentioned untoward aspects of NAFLD. In conclusion, the ability of ammonia-lowering strategies to control the symptoms and prevent the progression of NAFLD should be explored in clinical trials.
- |||||||||| Review, Journal: Neuromuscular Junction Transmission Failure in Aging and Sarcopenia: The Nexus of the Neurological and Muscular Systems. (Pubmed Central) - Jul 10, 2023
If sarcopenic older adults turn out to exhibit notable impairments in NMJ transmission (this has yet to be examined but based on available evidence appears to be plausible) then these NMJ transmission defects present a well-defined biological mechanism and offer a well-defined pathway for clinical implementation. Investigation of small molecules that are currently available clinically or being testing clinically in other disorders may provide a rapid route for development of interventions for older adults impacted by sarcopenia.
- |||||||||| Journal: The association of peripheral and central olfaction with frailty in older adults. (Pubmed Central) - Jul 10, 2023
Investigation of small molecules that are currently available clinically or being testing clinically in other disorders may provide a rapid route for development of interventions for older adults impacted by sarcopenia. Both OS and OI, predominantly peripheral and central measures of olfaction, respectively, are associated with frailty implicating olfaction as a potential biomarker and risk factor for frailty.

- |||||||||| Hippocampal volume as mediator between physical fitness and cognitive performance in old age (In-Person) - Jul 6, 2023 - Abstract #AAIC2023AAIC_8932;
While preliminary, the results suggest that muscular capacity exerts its neuroprotective effects at least partially via greater structural integrity of the hippocampus. The absence of a mediation effect of GMV may support the specific importance of maintained hippocampal structural integrity against cognitive decline.
